The Importance of the Sales Team in a Software Company

I have worked for about 15 years in sales and most of my friends and work
colleagues have a sales background.

There is one question that always comes to mind. What makes a product, the
product itself or the people that present that product to the clients?

I have come to the conclusion that it is the people that present and sell
the product or service that make it a sellable good. Without a good sales and
marketing team you are dead, no matter how good the product is. Sales just
won’t come in.

You can specially notice this when a salesperson leaves a company. If he was
good you’ll start to see your clients creep slowly away. The sale was made
because of the confidence that was built up with the sales representative.
You take away that person and the client usually feels he has no longer a good
product or service, even if the product or service is actually better than
it was when it initially got sold.

Trying to make them hang on to you is not easy, you will probably need a better
salesperson than the one that has left and, even then, if the client doesn’t
relate as well to your new salesperson you’ll very probably lose the client
and there’ll be nothing you can do about it.

The situation is not easy to solve. It seems some companies in Spain (which
is where I’m based) have started to use a more friendly approach when making
salespeople redundant. Establish a deal where the salesperson can still get
the client’s phone call when he calls so the client still has that person to
speak with.

Though it seems like a very short term solution really. This salesperson might
not be able to answer the calls still coming from the old company and he’ll
have to negotiate with the new employer so that they’ll allow him to do this.
This doesn’t seem plausible in the long run.

Even if this was a reasonable solution it would only really be valid for the
treatment the clients get when calling the sales representative. There are
some online businesses working only from the net and the phone nowadays but
for big clients the sales rep has to visit this client too. The personal touch
is very important and there are very few deals that have been done anywhere
without meeting face to face with your client.

That client will obviously want to continue seeing your salesperson’s face
every once in a while. If he doesn’t then he’ll most probably leave anyway.
Even if your ex-sales rep still calls him and receives his calls.

So, it seems there is not an easy solution to the problem. The only real solution
would be ‘If you have a good sales representative then keep him’. Not much
more to it.

Saying this is easy but sticking to it is impossible, specially the way business
is like nowadays. So the next best option is that we get our sales managers,
the ones who have been working for years with us and are committed to the company,
to contact these clients when the deals are made too. This way our customers
will have a good relationship with the sales rep that did the sale and also
with the company committed sales manager that will stay on for years to come.

It is not a perfect solution, but it will probably help us lose fewer clients
when these inevitable things happen.
